The National Gender and Equality Commission is demanding justice for 17-year-old Gaala Aden Abdi, a victim of forced marriage who was killed and body burnt.
Gaala was forcibly married off to a 55-year-old man, a marriage that she suffered severe abuse leading to her death before her body was burnt beyond recognition in Wajir County.

“The brutal murder of Gaala Aden Abdi represents a horrific violation of the rights of women, children and refugees. We demand a thorough and swift investigation into this crime, with those responsible being held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.” said the commission.
According to the commission, the was a clear violation of human rights, including child rights, women’s rights, and the rights of refugees.
They continued by saying that being a minor, Gaala was entitled to protection from forced marriage and abuse under both Kenyan law and international conventions.
The National Gender and Equality Commission is concerned about the rising cases of Gender Based Violence and is calling on the government to protect all individuals within its boarders including refugees as they are protected under international human rights and refugee convictions.
It is due to the incident that the commission has called on speedy investigation and justice for 17-year-old Gaala Aden Abdi and also prevent matters GBV.
