Acting Inspector General of Police Gilbert Masengeli has been charged with contempt of court and will be sentenced on Friday.
This is after the police boss failed to honour court summons as directed by Justice Lawrence Mugambi who called on the Police IG to abide by the constitution.
“It is the responsibility of the court to restore public confidence with the courts. IG may be removed from office if proven that he undermines the constitution.

The conduct of the first respondent has held this court at ransom.” said Justice Lawrence Mugambi
Speaking before the court was his legal team which noted that the Acting Police IG was still engaged in some activities in Wajir thus cannot avail himself as directed.
Through lawyer Nelson Havi, petitioners questioned the court as for how long they will wait to have him avail himself and thus should not only be convicted but also ousted from office.
“At the end of this, we will ask the court to do two fundamental things; to convict the acting IG for contempt of court and to sentence him to the highest permissible legal consequence.
We want Gilbert Masengeli not to hold public office because it is not his personal property. Masengeli was attending a concert. In Kenya, a concert is treated as a matter of national importance. How shameful!” he said
Masengeli is expected to appear before the court and explain the whereabouts of Jamil Longton, Aslam Longton and activist Bob Njagi who are believed to have been abducted by the police.
