Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigns, flees the country following protests

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has on Monday resigned and fled the country following bring to an end her 15 year rule.

In what began as protests against the quota government system of allocating jobs, the protesters stormed her official residence and other buildings linked with her family and relatives.

Even though her resignation has been welcomed, it will destabilize the economy which is already struggling with inflation, corruption and unemployment.

On Monday, Sheikh Hasina was seen on live TV boarding a military helicopter together with her sister before the country’s military chief Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman confirmed that the country was under military takeover until when another government comes in.

Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman also promised to investigate the events before and after the protests after several people were reported dead including police officers.

“Keep faith in the military, we will investigate all the killings and punish the responsible,” he said.

Even after the speech, people could be seen walking out with furniture and other belongings from the palace. Others occupied the family Museum where Sheikh Hasina’s father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, a previous leader was assasinated.
