Canadian PM Mark Carney calls for federal election, mandate to deal with Trump

Canadian PM Mark Carney has on Sunday announced federal election following a meeting with Governor-General Mary Simon to request for parliament to be dissolved.

“I’m asking Canadians for a strong, positive mandate to deal with President Trump and to build a new Canadian economy that works for everyone because I know we need change, big change, positive change,” he said

The elections which are set to be held in April will see the Prime Minister battle it with Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre who stands as the biggest political rival.

Carney came into power following the resignation of then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who resigned back in January 2025.

On Sunday, the Prime Minister called on the need to build a strong economy following President Donald Trump’s trade sanctions.

“We are facing the most significant crisis of our lifetimes because of President Trump’s unjustified trade actions and his threats to our sovereignty.

Our response must be to build a strong economy and a more secure Canada.” he said

“President Trump claims that Canada isn’t a real country. He wants to break us so America can own us. We will not let that happen.” he continued

Conservative leader Poilievre has termed Canadian PM Mark Carney as the right person to take on President Donald Trump and that they are seeking fourth term in power.

““Today, the Liberals are asking for a fourth term in power after swapping Justin Trudeau for his economic adviser and handpicked successor, Mark Carney.” he said
