Chebet, Faith Kipyegon bag gold and silver in 5,000m finals

Beatrice Chebet and Faith Kipyegon won gold and silver in the 5,000m finals but it was Kipyegon who was disqualified at the end.

This is after the reigning champion was accused of shoving Ethiopian Gudav Tsegay paving the way for Sifan Hassan to bag the silver instead.

It took the immediate response by Kenya to appeal the decision that saw Faith Kipyegon’s silver reinstated much to the joy of Kenyans who had been following up the event.

Speaking after the disqualification news came in was world 10,000 record holder Chebet who said that the decision was going to bring down their morale even though she was happy to win the country it’s first gold medal.

“I’m very sad about what has happened to Faith, I saw everything and hope justice will be served. That decision can affect our morale and so we hope our officials will win the appeal.

In spite of that, I’m happy to have finally given Kenya the first medal. I know some were impatient with us and I really want to call upon the Kenyans not to say bad things on social media. Please cheer us and we will win these gold.” said Chebet

Chebet won the race in 4:28.56 seconds as Faith Kipyegon came second in 14:29.60 seconds.
