The High Court has quashed a ban on anti-government in Nairobi Central Business District as directed by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja.
The orders that had been issued last year by the IG also demanded that demonstrators must have a designated leader.

On Thursday however, Justice Bahati Mwamuye noted that the ban on anti-government in Nairobi CBD was a against human rights thus unconstitutional.
According to Kanja, the demonstrations in June 2024 had been filled with criminals and without a leader then the demonstration will make it hard for the police to enforce safety protocals.
Kanja continued by revealing that he had received intelligence reports that the demonstrations had been filled by criminal gangs whose intention is to loot and carry out attacks.
Justice Mwamuye in his ruling noted that the statement by the IG to have a designated leader was unconstitutional as it hindered the enjoyment of the right to protest.
Katiba Institute had challenged the ruling by Kanja as he had taken over the right to decide who enjoys to assemble, picket and protest under article 37 of the constitution.
