Dedan Kimathi’s family demand proper burial of freedom fighter

The family of Dedan Kimathi has called for a proper burial of the freedom fighter 67 years after his death.

Speaking on Sunday at Central Business District in Nairobi, the family of the freedom fighter called on the government to fulfil its promise of lying him to rest at Njabini, Nyandarua County.

Even after 67 years, the family is still waiting for the Kenya Kwanza government to fulfil its promise of a decent burial back at his ancestral home.

Speaking on the issue was Kimathi’s son Simon Maina who said that both President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua made the promise to his wife Mukami ayear ago.

“We are tired of being lied to. This government promised that they would exhume the remains of our dad and accord him a decent burial at his home in Kinangop, Nyandarua County. But up to now, it is all lies,” he said

“I think they want everyone to forget about us and the Mau Mau heroes, but we will not forget. Every year on February 18 we remembered the day our dad was killed. It’s now 65 years and no one seems to care,” he added

Maina’s sentiments were backed by his sister Miriam Nyawira who said they are still waiting for the current regime to fulfil the promise.

Following his death 67 years ago, it was discovered that his body had been buried at Kamiti Maximum prison where he was being held. A request to exhume it failed even after his wife pleaded with the government to fulfil the promise.
