EFL has announced new changes as to how the VAR operates ahead of the Carabao Cup semi-final between Arsenal and Newcastle.
For the first time, the VAR system will be introduced in the competition bringing in a new twist where decisions will be announced at the stadium using a PA system.
“The two matches against the Magpies will see the use of the video assistant referee for the first time during our run in this season’s competition, which is the usual policy for cup semi-finals and finals where all the two teams already have the technology in place for Premier League matches.

- Recovery has begun and I’m coming back stronger, says Bukayo Saka
However, there will be a twist starting with our home leg at Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, January 7 as the EFL are trialling a new system of allowing the officials to explain their decisions over the stadium’s PA system.
Referees will announce the final decision following a visit to the pitchside monitor, or upon the conclusion of factual matters such as accidental handball by a goalscorer or offside judgements. Only the final decision will be announced in the stadium, not the full conversation between the on-field referee and VAR.” said Arsenal.
The system which has been tried at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup will also provide clarity as to why a decision has been made.
“This pilot marks the first time referees will talk to the supporters in the stadium and those watching on TV here in the UK, but the system has been used in tournaments such as the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, aiming to provide better clarity and understanding around key decisions.
This will also be the case for the other semi-final as Liverpool face Tottenham Hotspur, with us hoping to meet the victor should we overcome Newcastle to reach our first League Cup final since 2011.” said Arsenal
