Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs CS Salim Mvurya has warned that fish from Lake Nakuru are unfit for human consumption.
The CS was speaking from Embu County after meeting Governor Cecile Mbarire where he said that tests conducted at Lake Nakuru revealed high levels of arsenic.
Arsenic which is a chemical contained in many minerals has the danger of causing cancer and skin lesion if someone if exposed to it for a long time as confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Also linked to the chemical is diabetes and cardiovascular disease with immediate effects being nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
“In the last Cabinet that we sat in Sagana, I made a presentation to confirm that the fish in Lake Nakuru is not fit for human consumption. We have fish that have demonstrated some 32 percent level of arsenic metal which is not good for human consumption.
So it is true that we confirmed it is not suitable for human consumption and therefore we have formed a multi-agency team. The departments of fisheries and blue economy, the environment and others are looking into this matter.” said the CS
In Embu, the CS noted that the initiatives launched by the government in the county will benefit it greatly especially to the residents.
