Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has hit out at Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir for failing to support families affected by the El Nino rains.
Speaking from Kisauni, Mombasa, the Deputy Governor noted that the national government has released Ksh 10 billion to support those affected by the rains but it is the work of the Governor to ensure that the funds are released.
““I want to tell the Govenor of Mombasa, Mr Nassir… utoe miguu kwa ngunia… As the national government, we shall try and purchase food. But we want the county government of Mombasa… the Governor to release the funds to buy food for the county residents.

We don’t want to see any governor blaming the national government for not distributing food. As the Governor, you also have money.
Why are you keeping money idle in the bank? Every Governor whose county has been affected by floods… suspend any other development activities and provide food, medicine and blankets for the people.
Once this crisis is over we shall go back to development issues. What is the purpose of the development projects you are doing if people are dying? If the people die, who will the projects benefit?” said the DP
The statement is contrary to that issued by the Governor who denied receiving any funds to support the affected.
Gachagua praised the Wajir, Garissa and Mandera Governors for ensuring residents are supported with food by releasing the funds sent to them.
“I want to commend the Governors of Wajir, Garissa and Mandera. They have released Ksh.50 million to feed residents in those counties. We want to see the same done here and Tana River. Release funds for families to get food, medicine and blankets.” he said
