Government kicks off scrutiny of Ford Foundation

The government has kicked off an intensified scrutiny of Ford Foundation, a foundation accused of fueling the recent anti-government protests.

Through demand letter dated 18th July 2024, Ford Foundation is requested to provide comprehensive account of how Ksh 194 million in grants was utilized by its 16 recipients.

Issuing the demand letter was Principal Secretary of Foreign Affairs, Abraham Korir Singoei to Ford Foundation President Darren Walker requested the exact activities that were spent on using the issued grant.

According to Singoei, the foundation should immediately clarify the grants it has received in the last one year, the activities it was assigned to especially in the last three months, amounts disbursed for each project and those it plans to disburse in the future.

The government once again reminded the organization for to focus on its non-governmental duty in the county and to know as to whether they have any punishments they face if they go outside there mandate.

Among those suspected of benefiting from the grants include Africa Uncensored Limited, Kenya Human Rights Commission, and Mzalendo Trust. The three are accused of playing a pivotal role in the recent demonstration witnessed in the country.

President William Ruto has already put them on notice that they will face consequences if they continue with the allegations. “we are going to call them out and we are going to tell them that they either style up or they leave.” he said

In response to the allegations, Ford Foundation maintained that it adheres to its mandate and that it is accused of.

“While we acknowledge the right of Kenyans to peacefully advocate for a just and equitable country, we repudiate any actions or speech that are hateful or advocate violence against any institution, individual, or community.” they said
