The Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) has reverted to the old model of payment for first and second year students in the country.
The decision follows s strike by University of Nairobi students who stormed HELB headquarters demanding the immediate release of their loans.
The strike escalated quickly outside the headquarters located at Anniversary towers before they were allowed in to present their grievances.

In there defense, HELB noted that the delays were caused by a High Court ruling in December that declared the new funding model unconstitutional.
“The disbursement delays stem from a court decision that halted the implementation of the new funding model, forcing HELB to temporarily revert to the old system until the legal matter is resolved,” said lending manager King’ori Ndegwa
Ndegwa continued by saying that even though the decision is illegal, they will use the old model until when the matter before court is determined. According to Ndegwa, Ksh 3.1 billion has been distributed to the students as at today.
“It’s illegal, but we will now pay HELB using the old model,” said Ndegwa
