The High Court has on Wednesday awarded 11 lawyers who participated in the 2024 anti-tax protest Ksh 200,000 compensation.
The compensation follows a ruling that confirmed that their rights to picket had been violated by the police during the demonstrations.

According to the lawyers, they were tortured and clobbered during the protest as the police also accused of excessive force.
“The Respondents beat, clobbered, maimed and tortured persons participating in the peaceful march, and in the process also treated them in a cruel, inhuman or degrading manner.,” they told the court.
At the same time, Â Judge Bahati Mwamuye also declared a ban by Nairobi Police Commander Adamson Bungei as illegal and unconstitutional.
Bungei through a media alert banned protests and public assemblies within Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) back in June 2024.
The High Court Judge noted that the police commander had acted beyond his powers as he emphasized that peaceful protest is a right enshrined in the constitution.
