Jimmy Carter, 39th U.S President dies aged 100

Former U.S President Jimmy Carter has on Sunday died at the age of 100 years at his  home in Plains, Georgia as confirmed by his center.

Mourning the former President was President Joe Biden who referred to him as a dear friend who many around the world would have also thought him as a dear friend.

“Over six decades, Jill and I had the honor of calling Jimmy Carter a dear friend. But, what’s extraordinary about Jimmy Carter, though, is that millions of people throughout America and the world who never met him thought of him as a dear friend as well.” he said

He continued by calling on all Amricans to pay homage to Jimmy Carter at their respecyive places of worship on January 9th.

“I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President James Earl Carter,” he said

Jimmy Carter became U.S 39th President in January 1977 after defeating Republican President Gerald Ford in the 1976 election. He however ruled for one term which was marked by 1978 Camp David accords between Israel and Egypt which brought stability in Middle East.

Carter vied for re-election in 1980 but was defeated by then President Ronald Reagan, a Republican,  former actor and California governor.

Also mourning the former President is Egypt President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who extended his message of condolence to the family, friends and people of U.S.

“In this moment of sorrow, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of former American President Jimmy Carter, as well as to the President and the people of the United States of America. President Carter was a symbol of humanitarian efforts and diplomacy, as his profound faith in peace and justice has inspired many individuals and institutions around the world to follow his footsteps.

His significant role in achieving the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel will remain etched in the annals of history, and his humanitarian work exemplifies a lofty standard of love, peace, and brotherhood. His enduring legacy ensures that he will be remembered as one of the world’s most prominent leaders in service to humanity. May God have mercy on former President Jimmy Carter.” he said
