Karua denied temporary law practice certificate in Besigye’s case

The Ugandan Law Council has declined to issue Martha Karua a temporary law practice certificate to lead in Ugandan opposition politician Kizza Besigye’s case.

Confirming the news was Martha Karua who noted that her application was declined because copies of her practising certificate and letter of good standing from the Law Society of Kenya were not notarized.

In the case Basigye and his co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale have been charged with illegal possession of two pistols and eight rounds of ammunition following their controversial arrest in Nairobi on November 16th.

The case had been adjourned to December 10th to allow Martha Karua make her application.

The Council also informed Karua that her academic qualifications and nationality documents were not attached to the application and so was the case in Erias Lukwago, the mayor of Kampala and a lawyer in Besigye’s case.

“Rather than use these as reasons to decline my application, one would expect that the law council would have asked for whatever additional documents that it desired,” said Martha Karua

“Mr Lukwago is not only a well-known personality as the Lord Mayor of the City of Kampala but also as a practising advocate running a law firm.” she continued

The council further accused Martha Karua of presenting as a person holding a valid practising certificate in Uganda, allegations which she says was the reason behind her application for temporary practicing license.

“It was on this basis that an adjournment was granted to the 10th of December. In the light of these facts, I take great exception to this unmerited accusation by yourselves which constitutes an attack on my character and integrity, and undermines the appearance of impartiality of the law council.

“Your disparaging and personalized aspersions on my person and character, as well as the importation of extraneous matters, is regrettable and undermines the spirit of Jumuiya,” she said
