Kenya Certificate Secondary Education (KCSE) student from Shinyalu, Kakamega County has passed away after the family failed to raise his medical expenses.
Eugene Makale is reported to have died in what started off as a sore throat before his condition deteriorated.
‘When evening reached, I saw he was taken ill and was complaining of throat pains even just having a meal pass through his throat was a problem,’’ revealed his father

The family however faulted the government for scraping off Edu Afya which could have seen their son access the much needed medical treatment.
They continued by saying they were forced to purchasing over the counter drugs from a nearby facility to ease his pain but it did not work.
‘His fever worsened. We tried treating him with over-the-counter drugs that we had bought him. Upon reaching the hospital, he died,’’ said the family
The family’s sentiments were echoed by his teachers back at St Joseph Mukulusu who said that scrapping the medical insurance has affected students from poor backgrounds.
Makale’s classmates confirmed that he complained of throat like symptoms and was week during the first week and could barely eat something.
“He was not eating as he complained of sore throat and we trying by convincing him to at least eat so that he could sustain himself.” said a student
”Our local hospital around here, Shamakhubu, is our first resort as the residents of this place, and that is where we go if we have a medical emergency. The problem is the place has no drugs,’’ said another student.
