The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has denied the presence of contaminated rice in the market hours after issuing a notice to warn Kenyans.
Through a statement, KEBS called on Kenyans to ignore the allegation and that they have in there possession 452 sacks of contaminated rice that had been imported by Anytime Limited.
“The 452 bags of rice found at Anytime Limited were seized by KEBS in the interest of consumer safety and subjected to laboratory analysis. It was discovered the rice was not fit for consumption due to high aflatoxin levels,” they said

“All the 2,078,500 kgs of Pakistan long grain rice imported by M/S Gama Foods Traders Limited between 30th September 2024 and 12th November 2024 have been tested and found fit for human consumption.” read the statement
According to the agency, traders should adhere to the recommended storage instructions of the product to avoid possible contamination and spoilage.
“We urge traders to adhere to recommended product storage instructions to avoid spoilage and possible contamination of products within their stores.” they said
The statement comes hours after documents revealed that millions of kilograms of contaminated rice was in circulation.
KEBS had already intercepted the consignment from Pakistan back in September and October but million of it sneaked into the market even though it was unfit for human consumption.
