Kenya Railways through a notice has on Wednesday confirmed an increase in fare effective January 1st 2024.
The new prices will take effect all of their services that is the Madaraka Express Passenger Service, Madaraka Express Commuter Service, Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, Kisumu Safari Train and Nanyuki Safari Train.
They continued by confirming that the increase has been attributed to the changes to energy and petroleum sector which have increased significantly.
“This increase is informed by changes in the energy and petroleum sector where prices of fuel have significantly increased thus affecting the cost of our operations,” read the statement
Those using first class train from Nairobi to Mombasa and back will now pay Ksh 4,500 from Ksh 3,000 while those in the economy class will now pay Ksh 1,500 from Ksh 1,000.
Passengers purchasing advanced tickets have informed that they will notice adjustment in the prices as of November 1st, 2023 . They have however been advised to take advantage of the 60 days window.
