The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has threatened to strike if the CBS between them and the government is not met.
According to the union, there is no contention on the payment of medical interns except when the Ministry of Health plans to use the rates issued by the Salary and Remuneration Commission (SRC) of between Ksh 47,000 and Ksh70,000 gross.
“Payments of interns will be done for the UNCONTESTED cadres. The only payment in DISPUTE is the SRC circular that contravenes KMPDU CBA.
- KMPDU threaten to close medical facilities over Dr. Austin Omondi’s abduction
- Ministry of Health summons a meeting with KMPDU
We have had several meetings with the MoH that ended at a deadlock on 31/10/2024. Ministry stuck at SRC circular of 47k-70k gross, and we stood by CBA rate.
However, On 7th/11/2024, we had a 3 hour meeting with Head of Public Service at Harambee house. The engagement was more progressive, and more meetings were scheduled for next week. we shall communicate when we have a concrete outcome.
We have to comply with the court orders and negotiate with the ultimate aim of protecting the sanctity of collective bargaining.” said KMPDU
Currently, the Unions plans to hold boardroom negotiations with the Ministry of Health and the government in general but threatens to hit the streets if nothing is reached.
“Currently, negotiations are ongoing, but it is not unknown to the courts/government that negotiations are not limited to the boardrooms. We shall negotiate for 45 days in the boardroom, BUT when necessary, we shall begin to negotiate on the streets and finally negotiate at home.” said KMPDU
