KRA issues deadline on declaration of mobile phones IMEI numbers

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has issued a deadline on when importers of mobile devices and travelers should declare there IMEI numbers.

Through a notice, KRA noted that effective 1st January 2024 all importers, device assemblers and passengers should declare the IMEI numbers as required by law.

“We’re announcing enhanced regulations for mobile devices to strengthen tax compliance, taking effect January 1st, 2025 Under these regulations, the following will apply:

1. All importers are required to submit detailed import entries that include accurate quantities, comprehensive model descriptions, and the respective International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) numbers for each mobile device.

2. Device assemblers and manufacturers must register on the KRA Customs portal and submit a report of all devices assembled for the local market, along with their respective IMEI numbers.

3. Passengers entering Kenya will also be required to declare their mobile devices on the F88 passenger declaration form, providing the necessary details and IMEI numbers for devices intended for use during their stay.” said KRA

Even though the measures are meant to widen the tax base in the country, Kenyans have not welcomed the news citing lack of privacy given that IMEI numbers can be used to track individuals making it not safe for the people.

It is yet to be seen whether the new measures will be challenged in court citing the breach in the Bill of rights in the country.
