Lionel Messi made history by winning the Ballon d’Or trophy for a record eighth time beating Manchester City striker Erling Haaland who came in second.
The former Barcelona star recently led his national team Argentina to win the 2022 World Cup cementing his name in the world’s best players.
36-year-old Messi first won the coveted trophy in 2009 before winning it again in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021.

Speaking at the ceremony, the Inter Miami star wished Diego Maradona a happy birthday as he dedicated the trophy to him.
“Today I wanted to mention Diego. There’s no better place to wish him happy birthday here around many people loving football, as he wanted. Wherever you are, Diego… happy bday. This goes also for you” he said
He also dedicated the award to the entire Argentina team for winning the World Cup saying it was a gift to the players and the country at large.
“This award comes hand in hand with what has been achieved with the Argentina team. This is a gift to the players, coaching staff and the all people in Argentina”. he said
Haaland was not left out of the speech as the former Barcelona star noted his achievement among them being the top scorer and helping Manchester City win the Champions League last season.
“Erling deserved it very much too, he has won Premier League, Champions League while being the top scorer of everything. This award could have been yours today too.” said Messi
