Malawi’s President suspends himself and gov’t officials from foreign trips

President Lazarus Chakwera of Malawi has suspended himself and the entire government from foreign trips so as to save big.

In addition to the suspension, the President has also recalled back all government officials abroad and slashed fuel allowance for all government officials by 50%.

The news comes at a time when the the currency in Malawi is on the free flow at a time when they are about to secure another loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to boost the country’s economy.

Speaking on the issue, President Lazarus Chakwera called on finance minister to be reasonable when hiking the salaries of civil servants and noted that the new measures will run to March 2024.

The changes which are in addition to those imposed during the COVID-19 period will be accompanied by a reduction in individual income taxes so as to ease the high cost of living within the country.
