The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has confirmed that all Medical, Pharmacist, and Dentist Interns will kick off their strike with immediate effect.
Speaking on Wednesday, KMPDU said that the strike will be about unpaid salaries and restoration of dignity among the lives of the interns in the country.
“As of today, ALL Medical, Pharmacist, and Dentist Interns will stay away from their workstations until the government resolves the issue of their unpaid salaries. We will no longer participate in boardroom meetings to justify the value of interns’ lives while the government dances on their graves and perpetuates their enslavement and servitude.
The Union will convene a Special Delegates Conference on 30th November 2024 to pass binding resolutions on this crisis and address all pending issues under the Return to Work Formula dated 8th May 2024. This is not just about salaries; it is about the dignity, justice, and well-being of our future healthcare professionals.
We demand accountability, immediate action, and respect for the lives of those who dedicate themselves to serving the health of this nation.” said KMPDU Secretary-General Davji Atellah
The news follows the demise of Dr. Francis Njuki, and Dr. Desiree Moraa who are reported to have committed suicide as a result of work related stress and frustration in addition to unpaid salaries.
