A Mega Millions player in California has on Friday night won an estimated $1.22 billion lottery jackpot bringing to an end three months of no winner.
The winner whose identity remains unknown matched 3, 7, 37, 49, 55, and the gold Mega ball of 6 to win the jackpot.
It has been revealed that the ticket to the ultra lucky player was sold at a Sunshine Food and Gas station in Cottonwood, northern Carolina.
The winner however has two options as to whether it will be distributed annually for the next 29 years or a lump sum of approximately $549.7Â million if they opt for a cash payout.
This is the fifth time a Mega Millions player has won the ticket in 2024 after another winner who bought the ticket from Murphy Express in Sugar Land, Texas bagged $800Â million back in September 2024.
The winner from  Sol Living Trust opted for a cash payout and was paid $409.3 million as confirmed by the Texas company.
