Ministry of Health confirms ongoing negotiations over intern doctors salary

The Ministry of Health has revealed ongoing negotiations to resolve the issue involving intern doctors salary in the country.

Through a statement, the Ministry confirms that they are in discussion with SRC to get advisory on the signed 2017 MOU between them and KMPDU on the agreed salary of Ksh 206,000 to all intern doctors.

“The Ministry of Health remains committed to addressing the concerns of medical interns. Payments for the cohort of 1,247 interns currently in training centers are being made as per the 2017 CBA. Negotiations are ongoing to resolve the conflict between the SRC’s advisory to the Ministry of Health and the CBA signed between the Ministry of Health and KMPDU, which provides for a stipend of Ksh 206,000 per month based on Job Group L.” said Ministry of Health.

The news comes hours after KMPDU threatened to lead a nationwide strike if the demands on intern doctors salaries are met as per the 2017 CBA.

“The minister was saying that they can’t afford to pay interns this year because of the USAID freeze by U.S President Donald Trump. If Trump is putting the U.S first, the government needs to put Kenyans first.

If the wages are to be reduced or changed, it should not start with intern doctors; it should be for all, and should start with the presidency and the ministers. That’s why we’re saying we will not have any discussion about reducing the wages, we will only have a discussion on when to post the interns and where to post them.” he said
