Nyeri High Court has barred Hillside Endarasha Academy from reopening their boarding days after the institution was reopened for learning.
This follows the tragic death of 21 boys at the school leading to its closure for one month to ensure the matter is solved.
On Wednesday, the 800 capacity school was reopened for learning admitting new students for both day and boarding sections.
- Hillside Endarasha Academy inferno kills 17 pupils
- 156 boys accommodated ill-fated dormitory of Hillside Endarasha Academy
Before the deadly inferno, Hillside Endarasha Academy housed more than 300 pupils in its boarding section but moving forward the 98 girls and 97 boys will have to find other ways to continue with their education.
The court decision follows a successful application filed by the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) and the Elimu Bora Working Group who were seeking appropriate inspection and safety procedures conducted at the school in addition to provision of psychosocial support to the parents and pupils.
KHRC further accused the school management of moving fast to reopen the school without taking into consideration the safety of the students.
Even though Nyeri High Court Justice Dennis Kizito granted the plea by the petitioners, he approved the reopening of the school given that the education calendar is coming to end in less than a month.
