The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate the death of Rex Kanyike Masai within 21 days.
The 29-year-old was shot on Thursday at Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) during the #occupyparliament demonstrations before succumbing to the wound later on.
IPOA is now expected by ODPP to forward the inquiry file at the end of the 21 days so as to kickoff the prosecution of officer accused of the vice.

“Consequently, pursuant to the provisions of Article 157(4) of the Constitution, the Director of Public Prosecutions has directed the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to carry out thorough and comprehensive investigations into the matter.
Thereafter, the resultant inquiry file together with the report should be forwarded to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions(ODPP) not later than twenty-one (21) days from the date hereof.” said ODPP
Speaking on the same was IPOA’s Chairperson Anne Makori who noted that the authority was looking into the conduct of the police during the demonstrations including the serious injuries reported by some of the protesters.
She however commended the police for showcasing restraint unlike in previous demonstrations.
“The Authority commends the protesters for holding peaceful demonstrations while unarmed and equally commend the National Police Service’s visible restraint unlike in previous demonstrations.
However, the Authority has documented the death of Mr Rex Masai allegedly as a result of police shooting and several serious injuries suffered by other demonstrators including police officers.” she said
