Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah and 22 other arrested on Monday following the anti-abduction demonstration have been released on Ksh 1,000 cash bail.

Appearing before Milimani Principal Magistrate Rose Ndombi, the 23 individuals were charged with incitement to violence and civil disobedience.

Earlier on, prosecution had pleaded with the court to hold the 23 individuals claiming that they posed a threat to national peace and stability and that they used social media to cause unrest.

The police also pleaded with the court to hold them for 14 days so as to allow them complete their investigation, a request that was turned down.

Through their lawyers Hon. Kalonzo Musyoka and Martha Karua, they pleaded with the court to release them on free bond. The court finally reduced the cash bail to Ksh 1,000 with LSK agreeing to settle the bail.

“Our team led by Law Society of Ke Vice President mwaurakab attended court for the bail hearing of persons arrested during yesterday’s demonstrations. While the court allowed the release of the 23 accused persons to spend the New Year celebrations with their families, we sought a review of the bail terms from Kshs 5000 to Kshs 1000. We maintain our commitment to defence of the people’s civil liberties.” said LSK President Faith Odhiambo
