Police have recovered the body of a five-year-old girl who drowned with her mother in Nyamindi River, Kirinyaga County.
Even though the body of the girl was recovered, the body of the mother is still missing after the Saturday incident that has left many in shock.
29-year-old Maureen Wangui jumped in the swollen river with her baby strapped behind her back in what was a case of suicide.

On May 5th, residents of the area fetching water in the river spotted the lifeless body of the young girl identified as Precious Wairimu before alerting the police who responded swiftly.
Confirming the incident was the area police commander Mr. Johnson Wachira who said that the body of the deceased has been moved to the morgue as search of the mother intensifies.
An eye witness who guards a coffee factory in the area confirmed seeing the young mother jumping into the river before alerting the police.
Wangui who hails from Embu was visiting her grandparents in Kirinyaga when she suddenly went missing as she was was washing her cloths outside the house.
“She was washing clothes inside the compound when she disappeared unnoticed,” said the deceased’s grandfather Mr. Ngombo Kuruma.
