President William Ruto has been elected the chairman of the East African Community for a period of one year taking over from South Sudan President Salva Kiir.
Speaking after the news, the Head of State praised his predecessor as he took note of the strides that the community has gone through to achieve progress in Key areas.
“Under his steady stewardship, the EAC has made remarkable strides in deepening integration and achieving progress in key areas that define our shared aspirations,” he said

Ruto was speaking at a time when the bloc is working towards a political confederation to integrate all member states.
“The ambition of an EAC Political Confederation is an extraordinary journey towards the integration of our region,” he said
“We must harness emerging opportunities and build a more stable and competitive EAC that will accelerate the creation of a single continental market,” he continued
President William Ruto continued by urging member countries to increase competitiveness and promote value added production.
“We will focus on increasing competitiveness, promoting value-added production, boosting intra-regional trade and driving investments,” he said.
