Public called to identify unclaimed bodies at City Mortuary

The Nairobi City County Health, Wellness, and Nutrition sector has on Sunday called on the public who lost contact with their loved ones to visit the City Mortuary to identify the unclaimed bodies.

The appeal follows the a capacity crisis at the facility that should house 184 bodies but currently hold 600 bodies.

“The funeral home has surpassed its capacity, and it is now imperative for the public to identify their deceased relatives to free up space. The Nairobi City County is also seeking court approval to dispose of the unclaimed bodies,” read the statement.

According to the law, bodies should be held at a facility like City Mortuary (currently called Nairobi Funeral Home) for three months before they are allowed to dispose them off.

Before they dispose the bodies, they should issue a 14 day public notice for people to identify the bodies first before action is taken.

The Nairobi City Council confirmed to have notified the office of the Attorney General and the case is set for hearing at the Milimani Law Courts on October 15th.
