Detectives laid a trap in Nyali, Mombasa arresting three robbery with violence suspects using Airbnb to lure their victims before stealing from them.
The three are accused of luring foreigners inside an Airbnb in Mombasa before stealing from them in cash and transferring loads of cash using their connections abroad.
“Detectives from the Nyali Sub-County Office orchestrated a masterful operation to nab three robbery with violence suspects. The wily trio was cornered and captured in an Airbnb at Badar House, in Mwembeni area of Kisauni Sub-County, after a painstaking investigation traced their steps back to a daring daylight robbery of two Russian nationals in Bamburi.

On January 19, 2025, the suspects Mutegi Mbeti, Dickson Otwera Tunya, and Humphrey Nyairo Nyachwaya cunningly concocted a scheme that led their unsuspecting victims into a well-laid trap. Disguised as gracious hosts, they lured the complainants to the Airbnb, only to unveil their nefarious intentions. Brandishing weapons, they ordered the foreigners to give them Ksh2.5 million or else they would end their lives. They forced the victims into transferring 1, 986, 410 Russian Rubles online and surrendering cash amounts of 1,500 Russian Rubles, 120 Dirhams, and Ksh45,000.
As investigators delved deeper, they established that the suspects operate an elaborate online dating con, targeting foreign nationals with the help of overseas accomplices to funnel payments into foreign bank accounts.” said DCI
The three were arraigned before Shanzu Chief Magistrate where the police were granted three days to complete with their investigations.
“The trio was arraigned before the Chief Magistrate’s Court at Shanzu, where the court granted detectives three days to finalize their investigations. The case is slated for mention on January 24, 2025.” said DCI
