Ruth Chepngetich broke the women marathon record on Sunday finishing under two hours and ten minutes at the Chicago Marathon.
The record was previously being held by Ethiopian Tigst Assefa at the 2023 Berlin Marathon who finished in 2:11:53.
At the 2024 Bank of America Chicago Marathon Chepngetich became the fastest woman on the field clocking 2:09:57 to win it.

“Ruth Chepngetich destroys the marathon world record in Chicago with an incredible 2:09:57. That’s almost 2 minutes faster than the previous world record.” said World Athletics.

In the men race, Kenyan John Korir bagged the gold medal after clocking 2:02:43, his personal best to win his first World Marathon Major title.
John Korir who is the brother of 2012 Boston Marathon winner Wesley Korir now becomes the sixth fastest marathoner in history.
