A Constitutional Court in South Korea has upheld the impeachment of President Yoon Suk Yeol by parliament after he imposed martial law in the country.
The controversial declaration sparked outrage and caused the biggest political crisis ending his short stint as the country’s President.

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo has since taken over the Presidential role on an interim basis until when a new President is sworn in office. An election is due to be held in the next 60 days as declared by the constitution.
Speaking on the impeachment was Acting Chief Justice Moon Hyung-bae who said that the President acted beyond his powers and thus challenged democracy.
” Yoon committed a grave betrayal of the people’s trust who are the sovereign members of the democratic republic,” he said
He continued by saying that his actions also affected the economy, foreign policies among many other important aspects of the country.
Thousand of people cheered to the news saying that they have won as they welcomed the news that signals an end to economic crisis staring at South Korea given the slow economic growth.
64-year-old Yoon now faces criminal trial and has gone into history as the first South Korean President to be arrested on January 15th. He was however released in March after his arrest was challenged in court.
