Taita Taveta Deputy Speaker Anselm Mwadime was on Monday arraigned before court and charged with embezzlement of public funds.
The bonding trip to Zanzibar saw 30 county officials including 21 MCAs sponsored to attend the event where a total of Ksh 17 million was siphoned.
“Taita Taveta Deputy Speaker Anselm Mwadime Chao arrested by EACC was today arraigned before the Mombasa Anti-Corruption Court where he pleaded not guilty to seven counts relating to embezzlement of public funds.

This was in a bonding trip to Zanzibar sponsored by the County Assembly for 30 officials including 21 MCAs. Chief Magistrate Hon. Alex Ithuku granted the accused person a bond of Kes. 1 million with surety of a similar amount or cash bail of Kes. 500,000/-. The matter has been set down for a pre-trial hearing and directions on 11th March 2024.
The Commission’s investigations established that a total of Kes. 17 million was spent on the trip out of which Kes. 9 million was directly paid to the organizers for logistics while Kes. 8 million was paid as imprest to 30 officials.
The County Assembly used forged documents to account for the fraudulent expenditure. The officials were overpaid while some of those who received allowances did not travel.
One of the suspects in the case, the County Assembly Clerk Gadiel Maganga who is yet to be arrested is directed to forthwith present himself at the EACC Mombasa Regional Office for processing.” said ODPP
