We did not send Kenyan police to Haiti, says Meg Whitman

US Ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has clarified as to who sanctioned Kenyan troops to Haiti to bring stability to the country.

Speaking on Tuesday, Meg Whitman said that it was the International community that sanctioned the mission and that the US only issued financial assistance.

“We did not send Kenyan police to Haiti, it was the international community that asked Kenya to do this and if I say they are very grateful. We have however provided financial support of $100 million and equipment and then others are joining in,” she said

She continued by saying that the US does not always get involved in all such cases by sending her soldiers and that troops from Kenya are so far doing a great job.

“We don’t put boots on the ground in every instance, this is one where we decided not to.

The international community is very grateful to Kenya for agreeing to lead the Multinational Security support mission into Haiti. They arrived around the middle of June and I have to say it’s going very well.

The Haitian National Police are working very closely with the Kenyan Police. They have done a very nice job and the Commander on the ground is doing a very nice job.” she said

The news comes amid heavy criticism from Kenyans who questioned why they have not sent their soldiers and instead supported the country. The issue of distance from US to Haiti compared to that from Kenya to Haiti has also been questioned by many Kenyans online.
