Zuku fined Ksh 500K for sending former customer promotional messages

Wananchi Group Limited better known as Zuku have been fined Ksh 500,000 for sending promotional messages to a former client despite request to stop.

Issuing the orders was Data Commissioner Immaculate Kassait who also called for the prosecution of the company’s directors accusing them of obstructing investigation into the complain.

The aggrieved client identified as Yasin Abukar accused Zuku of failing to erase her information from there database despite seizing to be a client years ago. The case had been filed on November 18th, 2024.

According to the Data Commissioner, Yasin had reached to Zuku verbally, through email and on phone to stop sending the promotional messages but did not stop. Yasin also confirmed that he reached out to the company via email but the email provided was invalid.

The company in its defense noted that they checked through there system and did not get any request from Yasin requesting deletion of his records from there system.

Zuku now have 30 days to appeal the ruling made on 15th February 2025.
